The Investigative Journal held its official launch on July 9, 2019 from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. at London’s SouthWark Cathedral. Members of TIJ’s staff and board hosted prominent journalists, academics, diplomats and members of the civil society community and non-governmental organizations and celebrated the establishment of this long-form investigative journalism publication based in London-UK.

Journalist Maria Ressa provided the keynote address. Ressa is the chief executive officer and co-founder of Rappler, an online news site in the Philippines, and was among the journalists named TIME’s 2018 Person of the Year. Award-winning Australian journalist Yalda Hakim, news anchor, documentary maker, and BBC World News presenter and correspondent moderated the event.

Mohamed Fahmy the CEO of TIJ introduced the event by playing a video message from his friend Tamara Pearl, Vice President of the Daniel Pearl Foundation and sister of Daniel Pearl, the Wall Street Journal reporter who was kidnapped and murdered by Al Qaeda terrorists in Pakistan in early 2002, just four months after 9/11.

Award-winning Pakistani journalist Taha Siddiqui and Kerim Balci the former editor-in-chief of Turkish Review and Chief Communications Officer of London Advocacy Group spoke about their experience living in exile after their own governments attempted to silence them for simply doing their jobs.

Mohamed Fahmy formerly jailed in Egypt on fabricated terrorism charges and Sarah Clarke, Head of Europe and Central Asia for Article 19, an international organization defending freedom of expression and information participated in the panel about the dire global state of press freedom after 2018 was recorded as the worst year on record for journalists with more than 300 journalists jailed, 84 killed and 60 held hostage.
